Abiy Ahmed said that he is committed to the implementation of the peace agreement in the Tigray region

ADDIS ABABA —Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has told members of the Ethiopian Parliament that he is committed to the peace agreement he reached with the leadership of Tigray in South Africa earlier this month, to end the deadly two-year conflict in the north. Tigray region.

 

In a speech he delivered before the parliament on Tuesday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the warring parties must now ensure that they follow the agreement.

 

“We discussed, we agreed, and we signed,” said Abiy. “The next thing is expected to be implemented.” he added.

 

Only the implementation of this agreement, he said, “can bring lasting peace.”

 

Under the terms of the cease-fire agreement signed on November 2 in Pretoria, the Ethiopian federal government will take over Tigray’s borders, roads, and airports while Tigray fighters lay down their arms.

 

On November 12, military commanders representing the federal government of Ethiopia and those of Tigray region signed an agreement that included the disarmament of heavy weapons and the withdrawal of “foreign forces and non-ENDF (federal military)” from Tigray region.

 

Abiy also stressed that peace is necessary to improve the economy and preserve the “existence, sovereignty, and unity” of Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country with 120 million people.

 

“Peace is always good,” Abiy said, adding. “Even if you win, war is always bad, because you kill people, you burn dollars.”

 

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia was responding to questions asked by members of parliament.
