Ilhan Omar was re-elected for the third time

Ilhan Omar won for the third time in the election of the fifth district of Minnesota in the United States Congress, after defeating Cicely Davis from the Republican Party

Ilhan, who was elected to the US Congress for the first time as a Somali-American in 2018, maintained her position.

She made a brief speech to her supporters after winning, saying that she was pleased to be re-elected and that her triumph was one for Somalis.

In the DFL primary in August, Omar narrowly defeated Don Samuels, a former member of the Minneapolis City Council and a supporter of public safety. 51 percent of the vote went to Omar. After 98 percent of the precincts had reported, Samuels, who received 48 percent of the vote, conceded.

The Fifth Congressional District is the most populous in the state and the most reliably Democratic with over 700,000 citizens. The region encompasses Minneapolis’ outskirts as well as the city itself.
