The former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan was wounded in the leg today after a convoy of vehicles with him was fired upon while he was in the east of the country, according to his aide.

“A man with a random gun opened fire, several people were injured. Imran Khan was also injured,” Asad Umar told Reuters. Khan was admitted to the hospital.

The attack took place in the city of Wazirabad, which is about 200 km from the capital city of Islamabad.

Khan was shot in the leg, according to Fawad Chaudhry, the spokesman of the PTI party led by Imran Khan.

“Imran Khan and his party colleague Faisal Javed were injured in firing.” Khan was shot in the abdomen and both were taken to the hospital,” Chaudry told Reuters.

Javad, whose clothes were full of blood, told Geo television in the hospital that “many of our friends were injured. We heard that one of them died.”

A suspect in the attack was shot dead, according to one of Khan’s aides.

“A second man has also been taken into police custody,” Khan’s senior aide Raoof Hassan told AFP, adding that it was not yet clear who shot the attacker.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the shooting and ordered the foreign minister to conduct an immediate investigation.
