Somaliland Detains Opposition MP Mohamed Abiib Upon Return from United Arab Emirates

Hargeisa — Somaliland has detained opposition MP Mohamed Abiib as he returned from the UAE on Monday. In recent days, Somaliland’s prosecution has sought to have his parliamentary immunity revoked so he could face charges related to comments he reportedly made about the Somaliland military and the Somali National Movement.

He described [SNM] as a brutal paramilitary militia that massacred people from the Awdal region in 1991 during the Somali Civil War.

Reports from Hargeisa indicate that Somaliland’s security forces arrested MP Mohamed Abiib, a member of Somaliland’s House of Representatives, at Hargeisa airport upon his return from the United Arab Emirates.

Officials and parliamentarians who spoke to VOA Somalia confirmed that the parliamentarian was indeed arrested at the airport.

MP Abiib is known as a vocal critic of Somaliland’s leader, Muse Bihi Abdi.

In July of this year, the Attorney General of Somaliland requested that the House of Representatives impeach MP Mohamed Abiib.

One of the accusations against the MP at that time was that he met with officials from the Somali Embassy in Djibouti and discussed issues related to Somaliland forces.

In mid-August, a meeting of the House of Representatives of Somaliland was called, but the required quorum to remove MP Abiib’s immunity was not met.

It is unclear whether MP Abiib’s arrest is directly connected to the proceedings initiated by the Somaliland Prosecutor’s Office.
